Located west of Trinidad, Colorado, Valdez, Colorado was home to the miners of Frederick Mine. Valdez, Colorado was the cultural center for Frederick Mine containing the houses of miners, the company store, baseball field, local Y.M.C.A., and the local school for children of miners.

Miners from Valdez' Baseball Team

During their free time, miners would often engage in various activities including the sport of baseball. Mine towns formed their own baseball teams and would compete against each other. The above photograph details the baseball team from Valdez who worked at the nearby Frederick Mine.

Mines attracted many different ethnicities as they were a source of income. The above photograph details Native Americans who arrived at Valdez to sell blankets to the miners' families.

Miners relied upon company-owned houses. The area around Valdez was semi-arid and did not support much vegetation naturally. Miners' wives were encouraged to grow gardens and compete against other families for a prize. The above photographs detail several of these gardens that won the contests or were in second place.
