The first kindergarten opened at Sopris in 1892, prior to the beginning of CF&I's Sociological Department. W.J. Murray, the mine superintendent, raised funds for the school through entertainment and social events. The school was meant for young children from five to six years old, but children up to the age of sixteen attended to learn English, as many of them were children of immigrants.
